Chapter 10

At the mention of Daniel, Evie stiffened then glanced at Barry who looked about as stunned as she was. Evie focused on Jess. “When did this come about?”

“In the last few moments so no need for anyone to worry about dropping balls. The SHC was notified in the last few minutes.”

“While you were sitting here, you mean?”

“Yes. I have a constant communication link open with the SHC. They provided me with the information the instant they received the confirmation. That information is legally required to be provided to you and from previous behavior we believe they would hold that information close to their chests for as long as is possible.”

“Sneaky bastards,” muttered Ling. Then she froze and glanced at Jess from under her thick eyelashes. Again, the titan appeared unaffected by the comment.

Ash sighed and sank back against her seat. “So now what? What was this meeting supposed to accomplish?”

Barry sat forward, elbows on the table. “We need to go over your statements. Just so that we can be sure that nothing you have said can be used against Evie during the trial.”

Ash straightened in her seat and leaned forward to study Barry’s face. “You telling me that you are representing Evie?”

Barry nodded.

The two warriors looked at each other and shook their heads. Then Ash glared at Evie. “What’s gotten into your head? You want him to represent you against this charge? You barely even know the...guy.”

Evie bit her tongue. “I know enough about Barry to know he is loyal and honest and trustworthy. I can trust him to go to the ends of the earth in order to get me cleared of this charge. I honestly don’t think I know anyone else capable of doing that.”

Lily ignored Ash. “How do you know he has your best interests at heart? Didn’t we all kill a whole bunch of his men?”

“Friends,” Barry said softly.

Everyone looked at him but he wasn't at all affected by the scrutiny. “They were friends and brothers. Some of whom I knew for over a hundred years.”

“So why would you want Evie to escape this trouble. I’m surprised you wouldn’t just work it to your own advantage and have her lose and end up beheaded.”

“Beheaded?” Evie asked, eyes wide. She glanced at Jess. “Is that the punishment?”

The titan shook her head. “Not the standard punishment. But the brothers are petitioning for the punishment to be more severe given the fact that a nephilim was responsible for the death of a master. It’s the worst of sins within the Irin, apparently.”

Evie stiffened. She wanted to blurt out the face that Marcellus was associating with the Shade, with power from the darkest of evils, but she couldn’t mention that right in that moment. She’d have to wait to use that piece of information to her advantage. For now, she had to go through the motions of ticking off all the correct boxes.

“Well, nobody is getting beheaded,” Jess reassured the two warriors. “The brothers may request whatever they want,
